The marijuana leaf: the new fashion trend of the century

Marijuana and fashion

Nothing is more transgressive and non-conformist than fashion which becomes an ambassador of impactful messages for today’s society. The symbol of hemp is, today, the common thread that links the most impressive fashion houses and ready-to-wear designers, who have sincerely embraced the pro-marijuana idea.

Among these, it is worth mentioning the famous stylist Mara Hoffman who wove cannabis leaves onto her maxi dresses and trousers. But the desire to weave the symbol of cannabis involved and literally overwhelmed many other faces of international high fashion and “very important people” who offered themselves as testimonials for a “green project”.

Scheherazade Goldsmith, green designer and co-founder of the jewelery brand Loquet London, stated in a recent interview that for her the hemp leaf is a symbol of revolution and change.

The luxury jewelry designer Jacquie Aiche, for example,  founded his eponymous line in 2007, inspired by the hemp leaf motif.
The sinuous shape of the leaf can be found in earrings covered in diamonds, in necklaces, rings and clutches made with snakeskin, which Rihanna, Kendall Jenner and other famous exponents such as the activist Bianca Barnhill can no longer do without. From jewels to sport: when they say that “there is something for everyone”.
Jeremy Scott, the designer of the well-known fashion house Moschino, launched the Adidas logo in a cannabis version in 2012, surprising and exciting the “fashion community”.

Alexander Wang followed this trend, incorporating black and white leaf designs on its fall 2016 collection.

While the first grinder (shredder that allows for purer smoke) designer was to Vetements (by Demna Gvasalia), sold out in one day.

And from the reproduction of marijuana-shaped prints we move on to the creation of garments entirely produced with hemp fiber.

The designer Deborah Lindquist, nicknamed the “green queen”, famous for having created numerous luxury objects and clothing for the Pussycat Dolls and Pink, dedicated her own line to “Maria”, producing, among other things, clothes in hemp fabric, despite never having declared herself an open supporter of marijuana.

Beneficial properties of hemp fiber

But why has natural hemp fiber become part of the “fashionable business”?
First of all, because hemp is a plant highly sustainable, It does not require pesticides and does not require any chemicals to develop.

Secondly, hemp fiber is the most resistant among natural fibres and this allows it to be used frequently for the production of jeans and shoes. And listen, listen women: unlike flax, hemp has the characteristic of creating less incisive creases on clothes, which means using the iron much less.

Again, it is antibacterial, absorbs odors minimally and is highly breathable: in fact it manages to maintain the body temperature of the wearer.Beyond the beneficial properties of the fibre, the world of textiles and luxury is gradually including in its cultural and conceptual baggage the revolutionary idea that an ever stronger message of acceptance can be sent through the brazen display of marijuana on its collections.Cannabis merchandising thus opens up a wider avenue destined to make its way among those who choose to be “out”, but with style.
