Why cannabis turns purple
The purple comes from anthocyanins — the same pigments in blueberries and aubergines. They are already in the plant, hidden under the green of chlorophyll. As chlorophyll fades late in flowering and the right conditions arrive, the anthocyanins show and the bud turns purple.
Two things matter most: genetics (some varieties are prone to anthocyanins) and cool night temperatures in the final weeks.
Colour is not potency: the myth to bust
A purple bud is beautiful, but purple does not mean “stronger”. Anthocyanins are pigments, not cannabinoids: they do not raise CBD or change the effect. What defines a flower is its cannabinoid and terpene profile. Colour attracts; quality is measured elsewhere.

Purple strains tend to express sweet, fruity, floral terpenes — often myrcene and linalool, with hints of grape and blueberry. Aroma — not colour — is your best guide.
